Surf Life Saving Australia, October 8, 2017: The reigning king and queen of the Coates Hire Coolangatta Gold, Ali Day and Courtney Hancock will sit on their thrones for another year, after holding off a host of potential usurpers today.
Day, from Surfers Paradise, won a record-equalling fifth title in the gruelling 41.8km course, while Hancock (Northcliffe) outlasted a fast-finishing Allie Britton (North Burleigh) to win for the third time.
Surf Life Saving Australia, October 8, 2017: Inspired by messages from four-time Coates Hire Coolangatta Gold long course champion Ali Day and other clubmates, New Zealander Ben Cochrane powered his way to victory in the open men’s short course race at Coolangatta today.
In his first season competing for Surfers Paradise, Cochrane raced to victory ahead of Kyle Garrett (Avoca Beach) and Matthew Bell (Newport), while WA’s Currumbin-based Kirstie Hardstaff was a comfortable winner of open women’s race ahead of Carla Papac (Cronulla).
Surf Life Saving Australia, October 6, 2017: With months and many kilometres of training now behind them, a record field of more than 780 competitors is ready to take on the iconic Coates Hire Coolangatta Gold this weekend.
Athletes from inside and outside the surf lifesaving movement will contest the 21km short course race on Saturday, while the traditional 41.8km torture test will take place on Sunday as well as the Age Group and Teams events.
