SPRENGER, GUEHRER CONTINUE WINNING WORLD CUP WAYS...AND YOUTH TEAM WIN FIVE GOLD IN INDIA

marieke guehrer photo delly carr sal.jpgAustralia's Christian Sprenger and Marieke Guehrer have continued on their winning ways in the second leg of the FINA/ARENA World Cup in Durban over night.

Sprenger won the 200 metres breaststroke in 2:06.07 and finished second in the 50 metres final, while Guehrer won the 100m butterfly and was second in the 50m freestyle to continue their gold medal winning form from the opening round in Belo Horizionte,, Brazil last weekend.

In other events, their Olympic team mate Sophie Edington finished second in the 50 metres backstroke.

Sprenger and Guehrer will be chasing further wins on day two, before heading home to prepare for the Sydney leg on October 25 and 26.

Meanwhile Australian swimmers have wound their record-breaking gold rush at the 3rd Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune, India winning six gold and four silver medals and setting five new Games records,

It took the final medal standings in the pool to a stunning 18 gold, 11 silver and seven bronze medals.

- A four-gold medal haul to Newcastle breaststroker Jessica Legge, who added the 200m breaststroke (2:32.09) to her victories in the 50 and 100m events and the 4x100m medley relay with Bridgette Taylor, Amy Smith and Merindah Dingjan. Taylor added individual gold in the 50m backstroke in 29.22

- Lachlan Staples stunning Games record win in the 200m butterfly in 1:58.67 - taking almost two seconds off Josh Krogh's Games record set in Edinburgh in 2000. Staples, who also won the 100m earlier in the week, was a member of the gold medal winning 4x100m medley relay with Jared Christie-Goldthorpe, Kenneth To and Ryan Napoleon and;

- Kacey Pilgrim's Games record time of 25.79 in the 50 metres freestyle, lowering Athens Olympic golden girl's Jodie Henry's Games mark of 26.18 set in 2000. Phoebe Cater gave the Dolphins a 1-2 finish with her silver medal swim in 26.31.

Wrapping up the sensational finish for the Australians were Amy Smith (silver in the 200m butterfly in 2:10.50); Kenneth To (silver in the 200m breaststroke in 2:21.48) and Thomas Barrett (silver in the men's 50m freestyle in 23.15). - IAN HANSON.
