Chalmers and Larkin win World Cup gold

Swimming Australia, October 17, 2016Olympic champion Kyle Chalmers and Rio silver medallist Mitch Larkin have both landed impressive wins in the two-day FINA/airweave swimming World Cup in Singapore.

Chalmers scored a comfortable win last night in the 200 metres freestyle after his second place swim behind Russian Vladimir Morozov in the 100m freestyle on the opening day.

Despite a disruptive preparation dealing with post Olympic commitments Chalmers still managed a World Junior record of 46.61 in the 100 and 1:42.67 in the 200m.

He also accounted for a classy 200m field including Daiya Seto (Japan) Peter Timmers (Belgium) and James Guy (Great Britain).

The 100m freestyle saw youngster Brayden McCarthy finish third in the 100m freestyle in 47.23 ahead of London Olympian Tommaso D'orsogna in 47.57.

Larkin showed all of the class which has made him one the world's finest backstrokers - winning  the 100 backstroke in 59.25 with fellow Aussie Bobby Hurley fourth in 50.88.

The three-time world champion then added the 200m tonight in 1:50.22 with emerging age grouper Clyde Lewis (1:53.77) third before Larkin's third in the 50m  backstroke in 23.29.

Meanwhile Australia's two-time women's backstroke world champion Emily Seebohm produced a total of six medals  - One gold, three silver and two bronze - behind Hungarian  "Iron Lady" Katinka Hosszu.

Seebohm landed gold in the 50m backstroke (25.18), silvers in the 100m backstroke (56.08), 50m freestyle (24.33) and 100m individual medley (58.54) with bronzes in the 200m backstroke (2:03.08) and 50m butterfly (25.91).

In other events Brayden McCarthy was second in the 100m butterfly in 51.24 and Kiah Melverton third in the women's 800m freestyle in 8:24.16.

Next stop Hong Kong then the final Asian cluster stop in Tokyo before the Australians return home for the 2016 Hancock Prospecting Australian Short Course Championships in Brisbane on November 3,4 and 5 which will double for the trials for December's FINA World Short Championships  in Windsor, Canada.
